Cokin NX Series

Cokin NX Series Filter System

My First Impressions

As a long time user and brand ambassador for Cokin, I was really excited when I received the latest NX Series Professional filter kit from Holdan UK. As Scotland is a photographer’s paradise, I decided to take a trip to Glencoe one of my favourite photography locations to put the latest edition to the Cokin family to the test. With an array of different ND filters and GND (grads) filters stored safely away in the filter pouch, I knew I would be able to control the light in most situations I was presented with. So off I went in search of the flowing rivers, waterfalls and mountain scapes which dominate this area.

The addition of being able to click the polariser which has a reassuring click when pushed into the rear of the holder, enables you to change filters at the front of the holder without having to move the polariser first. What I found really handy and a good feature is the integrated polarising adjustment wheel at the rear of the holder which enables you to adjust the polariser strength.

One of the best features of the NX system which I loved, was the metal frames which are made from strong, light premium aluminium. These made getting the frames out of the filter pouch and in and out of the filter holder a breeze.

I found the Cokin NX system easy to use, which is exactly what you want when working in demanding outdoor environments, where we often need to react quickly to changing light and variable conditions.

Another great feature of the NX system due to it’s new design, when I use my Nikon 17-35mm lens (my go to lens for landscapes) at the wide 17mm end, there wasn’t any vignetting which enabled me to photograph a wider scene. I also found that the Nuance Extreme filters didn't produce any colour cast which helps with the post processing of an image.

If you’re new to the world of filters, and looking to buy a filter system for a new camera or upgrading your existing system it can be difficult to know what to purchase and where your money is best spent. In the case of Cokin Filters, the company has come up with a way of making it easier for customers, by creating different NX Series kits from starter to professional, landscape and long exposure.

So after a demanding 5 days of photography sometimes 11 hours a day the Cokin NX filter kit performed flawlessly in all conditions. I highly recommend the Cokin NX filter kits to any photographer who’s wanting to get a new or upgrade their existing filter system.
